Welcome to the Center for Teaching the Rule of Law The most significant challenge to democracy in the world today is educating citizens about the importance of the rule of law and the need to promote, preserve and protect it. The Center for Teaching the Rule of Law is an independent, nonprofit educational organization located on the campus of Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. We are advocates and educators who provide the knowledge and resources necessary to teach the rule of law as the first rung on the ladder of understanding democratic principles, ideals and institutions. Without this understanding, citizens are unable to develop a personal relationship with the rule of law as active participants in the democratic process, leading to the erosion over time of democracy as we know it. All civics education today starts with the structure of democracy - separation of powers, branches of government and the function of each - without explaining why they exist in the first place. We provide the answer to bridge this critical gap in knowledge so people, young and old, will have a better appreciation of what it takes to keep democracy alive and well. We look forward to working with you to improve understanding of the rule of law as the basis for fairness, equality, justice, opportunity, stability and hope for all people everywhere. |
