Peace Armbands Read the scenario and then test your knowledge of the law
Mary Beth and John Tinker, seen here in photographs from the time of their case before the United State Supreme Court and again 5o years later, were the lead plaintiffs in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District.
In violation of a school policy prohibiting students from wearing an armband to protest the Vietnam War and authorizing suspension for refusing to remove the armbands, students wore black armbands displaying Peace Signs to protest the war. When asked to remove the armbands, the students refused. As a result, they were suspended until they agreed not to wear the armbands. The students appealed their case all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
