Royalists rejoiced at Cromwell's fall, and many satirical attacks surfaced, in which he was given the unflattering nicknames "Tumbledown Dick" and "Queen Dick". Exactly one year after Cromwell resigned, Charles II returned to England and began the Royalist Restoration.
